Welcome to the #dominoforever Product Ideas Lab! The place where you can submit product ideas and enhancement request. We encourage you to participate by voting on, commenting on, and creating new ideas. All new ideas will be evaluated jointly by the IBM & HCL Product Management & Engineering teams, and the next steps will be communicated. While not all submitted ideas will be executed upon, community feedback will play a key role in influencing which ideas are and when they will be implemented.

Full integration of the Local Address Book in Mail

All the time of using traveler and mail with contacts you need to synchronise the local address book. If the user works on the Client it is not the same address pool. Yes the sync is active and the addresses becomes the same, but why can't Notes also work with the Mail addresses for start the System, link to the addresses and remove the local addressbook.

What do you mean with 'start the system' ? What addresses do you want to have linked? and why do you think the local address book shall be made obsolete?

All of the addresses could be stored in the mail. Why not also the advanced (connections, Locations, …).

If you are in the mails you switch to the mail contacts not to the local contacts. But if you are in the local contacts you switch to mail. The "Open List" only show the local contacts, not the mail contacts.

The replication is not active after the first installation. If a user got a fresh new installation and also a smartphone, it's hard to explain, why all the mails are ok, but not the addresses.

When the user never got a smartphone and only safe local contacts, it is really hard to explain, that all contacts are lost when there is a hard disk fail.

I hope you can unterstand my explanation.

Contact synchronization is a setting which users can enable. Admins can have this enabled using policies.

But why is the address book kept, so that 2 contact databases exist.

Some users will only use a Notes client to access applications and so have no Mail File. However, they still have a need for Location, Connection, Account documents, etc.

I wonder if implementing a sync process between Local Address Book and Mail File was probably the easiest way to get contacts into a users Mail File so they could be synced to & used by mobile devices / iNotes, etc. without impacting other things.  Policies should allow you to enable this setting for all users (even those that don't have a mobile device)?

Removing the Local Address Book would likely have impacted other functionality in the Notes client, 3rd party tools / addons, etc.  You could use the roaming functionality as a way of backing up users other local data like Local Addres Book, Desktop/Bookmarks, etc.?

    Hope this helps.

Users must be aware that they have to enable synchronisation. That's difficult to tell every user in a company with lots of users.

And: even if they enable it, they have also to enable scheduled replication. This cannot be done by administration for specific locations.

So replication of the address book as default would be nice.

The next problem occurs, if ID switching is allowed an the computer and addressbook is replicated. The result at the end of the day is, that all addresses are replicated to all mailboxes - sometimes this is not what the user wants.

Could separation (and so a different database) of locations, connections and address data be a solution?

Users do not need to enable this manually. Administrators can manage this setting by using policies. see Desktop Policy Settings / Basics:

Yes, that's right. But it does not synchronise without clicking "Start now" (one time) or activating the replication schedule.

But there is no possibility to activate the schedule for just one location by policy.
